FIFA World Best Player 2018: Suarez reacts to Messi’s omission

Barcelona striker, Luiz Suarez, has finally reacted to fellow teammate, Lionel Messi’s omission from the final shortlist for this year’s FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year.

Recall that Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah made the final three for 2018 FIFA’s Best Men’s Player of the Year award.

Ronaldo and Modric both helped Real Madrid to Champions League glory, before the Portugal captain moved to Juventus this summer.

Salah scored 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last term, as they reached the Champions League final.

Suarez, however, believes that the Argentine captain is more focused on helping the Catalan club to win more trophies on the pitch this season and not on the world’s biggest individual award.

“I don’t think that any award [Messi] does or doesn’t win takes anything away from what he has won and what he keeps on achieving,” Suarez told ESPN.

“It’s just like when I was scoring goals and deserved [to win] things, I was above all that.

“You prove yourself by working hard, with what you do in every game.

“The prizes that are worth more are the ones you win on the pitch.

“An example of that is being top scorer: no one can take that away from you because you won it with the goals you scored, proving yourself on the pitch, not because of a vote by players and journalists.”

The award will be held on 24 September 2018.
