FIFA suspends bidding process for 2026 World Cup

The bidding process for the 2026 World Cup has been put on hold, following allegations of corruption surrounding the award of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments to Russia and Qatar respectively.

Host for the 2026 edition was scheduled to be selected at the FIFA Congress in Kuala Lumput in May 2017.

However, Jerome Valcke, the secretary general of the world football governing body, told a press conference in Russia, that the bidding process has been suspended.

FIFA later released a statement, which read: “It was decided to place the administrative process on hold for the 2026 FIFA World Cup bidding due to the current situation.

“Further decisions regarding the 2026 FIFA World Cup bidding process will discussed by the FIFA Executive Committee at a later date.”

Russia and Qatar’s bids are currently being investigated by Swiss authorities, as controversy and scandals continue to haunt FIFA.
