FIFA presidential election to hold February 2016

The election to choose Sepp Blatter’s successor, will now held on February 26, 2016.

This was confirmed by FIFA’s executive committee on Monday at a news conference, which was interrupted by comedian Lee Nelson who threw fake bank notes at Blatter.

Blatter announced his decision to resign four days after being re-elected in May, but he made it clear that he will remain in his position until a new man is appointed.

UEFA president, Michel Platini, has emerged one of the favourites to replace the 79-year-old, but Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, wants a candidate from outside football to become the new FIFA president.

“The future of FIFA is at stake,” Prince Ali said in a statement to The Associated Press.

“If a December election is called, there will not be the meaningful change in the leadership of FIFA that we so desperately need.”

He also insisted that, “President Blatter’s resignation cannot be dragged out any longer. He must leave now,” before adding that his former opponent “cannot be permitted to plan his succession and manage this election process.”
