FIFA have announced that the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, will be played on December 18.
Spokesperson for the world football governing body, Walter De Gregorio, confirmed the date on Thursday, but did not give the dates of the kick off. However, he admitted that the executive committee will prefer a 28-day competition, which could mean the first game being played on November 21.
UEFA had proposed a December 23 final, but by opting for it to be played five days earlier, FIFA has helped protect the English Premier League’s Christmas schedule.
President Sepp Blatter had earlier said at February’s International Football Association Board AGM that, “The World Cup will not go on until the 23rd, definitely not, we have to stop at the 18th. I am against going to the 23rd.”
Qatar was chosen as hosts for the 2022 World Cup in December 2010.
