The Federal Government is yet to officially notify foreign airlines, on the planned closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
According to Daily Trust, none of the airlines has received the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), which is expected to be issued by the airport authorities.
The FG had announced through the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, that the Abuja Airport would be closed for six weeks between February and March, for rehabilitation of the runway.
Construction giants, Julius Berger, are expected to fix parts of the runway which are badly damaged.
Sirika explained that during this period, Abuja-bound flights from any part of the world, would use the Kaduna International Airport as an alternative.
However, foreign airlines are yet to make a decision on the alternative being provided by the FG.
“This is a decision that has to be taken by our Head Office but we’ve not been informed as I am talking to you to enable us reach out to authorities at our Head Office and you know that would require writing us a letter as well which we can table before our respective authorities”, a foreign airline representative told Daily Trust.
Some of the airlines are British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Egypt Air, etc.
Emirates and Kenya Airways stopped flying into Abuja in 2016.
