FG to redeploy troops to Niger Delta – Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Monday that the Federal Government has started deploying the military to the Niger Delta.

He said the step became imperative in order to end the sabotage of oil facilities and abduction of citizens for ransom in the coastal areas of the country.

This was made known in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu.

Buhari spoke at a meeting he had at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with a delegation from the United States Institute of Peace.

The President was quoted as saying that his administration was giving the highest attention to the resettlement of displaced persons and reconstruction of in the North East ravaged by activities of the Boko Haram sect.

The President told the delegation that his administration’s war against graft would be fought within the ambit of the law.

He said his administration had put in place measures to ensure rights of the citizens were not infringed upon in the fight against terrorism and corruption.

“We attach great importance to human rights. If there are breaches, they will be investigated and dealt with,” he said.

Buhari, therefore, commended the USA, Europe and other countries for the growing international support for Nigeria in her efforts to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

Buhari also thanked Nigerians for their support for the programmes of his government, the security of the country, the war against corruption and revival of the economy.

Ms Nancy Lindborg, the leader of the delegation, applauded the progress being made by the Buhari administration in ensuring greater security in Nigeria.

She assured the President of the continued assistance of the Institute for the reconstruction and development work going on in the country.
