Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has reinstated the current administration’s resolve towards providing adequate funding for the Nigerian Police Force.
Speaking during the inaugural annual Inspector-General of Police’s Strategic Police Management Conference in Abuja, Osinbajo said the current challenges of the police ranging from lack of adequate training to other challenges facing the Force will be addressed.
Osinbajo who was represented by his Special Adviser on Economic Matters , Yomi Dipeolu said, “In view of the importance of your role in maintaining law and order, we will address the challenges of adequate funding, training and other challenges that you face.”
The Vice President, however, attributed the delay in the trial of cases to the attitude of police towards confessional statements, stressing that in some cases, the confessional statement do more harm than good.
“It is my view that the current way in which the police take confessional statements is the reason or one of the main causes in delay of trial,” he said.
Osinbajo called on the police to take voluntary confessional statements on videos or in the presence of a legal counsel of the suspect which is in line with the new provisions in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
