The Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole has directed the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate the spending of the 1.5million dollars grant given to each of the states in the federation.
The money according to the Minister was a seed grant where if used well will attract another grant.
Speaking at the 1st Cross River State Health Summit, the Minister said, “This State (Cross River) and others received 1.5 million Dollars in July 2016, this is a seed grant where if you use it well, you will get more, if you don’t use it well, you will not get any but let me warned that EFCC is after this money.”
He warned that “those who are fighting over this money should be aware, National Assembly is interested, Labour Congress is interested, so please, signatories should be aware because if you do not use it well, you are on your own”.
Prof Adewole regretted that Nigeria was one of the few countries in the World where 70% to 80% of the resources for health were in the pocket of people.
“Nigeria is one of the few countries in the World where 70%-80% of the resources for health are in the pocket of people and we must eliminate this”, he stressed.
“We are in a new era of partnership where we want to work with the state, we partner with you to bring health to our people, we will deliver health to our people.
,“Attention should be given to human resources. Doctors alone cannot do it, we do not have enough doctors to go round the entire country.
“We need nurses; we need midwives and other Health actors, community health workers, village health workers and others that can work effectively.
“There is no need to construct new health structure, we have enough and we need to make them functional, clear the weeds, provide water, provide electricity, put human resources there, the thing will work”, he stressed.
