FG bans top officials from flying first class

In its bid to cut cost and reduce unwarranted expenses, the Federal Government on Wednesday banned all top officials of government from flying first class, while going on official trips.

It stated that from now on, all top government officials such as ministers, permanent secretaries, Chairmen of Federal Government Committees, as well as Chairmen and Chief Executives of Parastatals and Agencies were to board the business class.

The move was disclosed in a statement made available by the Media Adviser to the finance minister, Mr Festus Akanbi in Abuja.

Before now, most government officials who should travel on business class used the first class, while many others opted for the business class instead of economy class.

Akanbi noted in the statement that the new directive had been captured in a circular on review of overhead released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

He said this came as a recommendation made by the Efficiency Unit, which was constituted by the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, last last year with the aim of reducing overheard expenses.

The unit was set up to insure transparency and curb government’s large expenditure through procurement in the various ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government.
