Nigeria Federal lawmakers who have been on annual recess since 27th July, 2016, will now resume officially on 20th September instead of 13th September, 2016 fixed earlier.
The notice which was contained in a circular signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Omolori indicated that the rescheduling was due to the Sallah celebration slated for 12th September, 2016.
The circular reads: “All Distinguished Senators and Honourable members of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are hereby informed that the resumption date of both Houses in plenary has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 13th September, 2016 to Tuesday, 20th September, 2016. ”
Meanwhile, the one week shift which has now made it complete two months that the National Assembly went on recess was not envisaged by the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, as it would unarguably affect official number of sittings per annum as required by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.
Checks by DAILY POST revealed that the 8th Senate under Saraki might run short of the required statutory sittings if there were no deliberate efforts to shore up before the end of 2016 legislative session.
More so, leadership of the upper and lower chambers seem to have kept mum over the official declaration by the National Bureau of Statistics that Nigerian economy has gone into recession.
In the past, federal legislators did invoke its statutory powers under matters of urgent National interest in convoking an emergency session to address the emergency situations.
