Federal civil servant allegedly steals office’s 55 chairs, 66 UPS systems

Abubakar Babetel, the storekeeper of an office complex of the Federal Ministry of Information in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, has allegedly stolen 55 plastic chairs and 66 UPS computer systems from the complex.

The allegation, which is now a subject of trial at the state Upper Area Court in Yola, was first reported to the police in December 2017, according to a First Information Report (FIR) on the case prepared by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Bello Samuel, and made available to newsmen after a sitting on the case Monday afternoon.

Hon Aliyu Ahmed, who presided over the Upper Area Court 1, was to rule at the Monday sitting on a no-case submission articulated by the counsel of the accused at the previous sitting on the case, but the trial judge adjourned the ruling to next month, April 23.

According to the FIR, the whole story started on December 8, 2017 when one Martin H. Fallu of the Federal Ministry of Information, Yola, reported to the police that on the previous day, other staff of the ministry discovered that their storekeeper, “one Abubakar Babetel of the same address, made away with the following items: 55 plastic chairs and 66 UPS computer systems.”

The FIR, which stated that the items were yet to be valued, said the offence runs contrary to Section 289 of the Penal Code.
