Fear of defection heightens as 21 PDP governors boycott reconciliation meeting

Only two state Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday boycotted a reconciliation parley aimed at re-uniting disgruntled members.

Also absent, were Senate President, David Mark, Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and many other stalwarts.

The Governors who attended were Idris Wada of Kogi state and the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom. Others who could not be there in person, sent their deputies to stand in for them.

The event which started in the afternoon and ended about 6pm, was held at the International Conference Center in Abuja, is one of the programmes lined up to celebrate one year of the party’s National Working Committee in office.

In his address, Akpabio dismissed newspaper reports that eight PDP Governors were planning to to join the new mega opposition party, All Progressive Congress.

The event was chaired by the country’s Vice President, Namadi Sambo.

The decision of some 21 Governors to stay away from what was seen as a highly significant programme of the platform which brought them to office, clearly indicated that all was not well within the ruling party, PDP.
