FCTA signs N130bn MoU to extend Abuja light rail

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU with Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), for the final design and construction of Lot 1B of the Abuja Light Rail project tagged addendum II valued at N130.680bn.

The Minister of FCT, Bala Mohammed who signed the agreement yesterday on behalf of the FCTA, said all avenues were being explored to complete the project, saying, “we are pushing the light rail to a logical conclusion so that we can have a vibrant transportation. This is an addendum to the existing project going on.”

He explained that Lot 1b will start from Area 3 in Garki through Wuse Zone 3, cutting across Utako, through Jabi, Gwarimpa, Karmo and Kubwa noting that the MoU for the Nyanya corridor has been signed, describing that aspect of the project as “the most critical.”

The Minister, who declared that no building or structure within the FCT is sacrosanct to be demolished for overriding public interest said the expansion of the road (Nyanya) will be done because it is supposed to be 10 lanes.

According to him, there is no reason for any apprehension on the part of anybody as buildings like the NNPC Mega Station, Danziyal plaza lying on the rail track will eventually give way.

Mohammed said the administration never wished to put FCT residents under unnecessary pressure, and has consequently created another mega station in Central Area between the ministry of transportation and the mega station.

“We have given another one in Kubwa road a notice. I assure you, the mega station will not be there. No building is sacrosanct that is above been removed for overriding public interest,” he said.

While speaking, the Chairman of CCECC, Sao Baogang, assured that the project would be completed next year before October.

For the Secretary of FCT Transportation Secretariat, Engr. Jonathan Ivoke, who had earlier given a brief on the Abuja light rail, the signing of the agreement is to officially flag off the segment 2 of the Abuja light rail and to also agree in principle for development of the part of Lot 1b. He revealed that Lot 1 and 3 of the project have attained 60 percent completion.
