The FCT Police Command has reacted to the reported attack on Nigerians who gathered to protest the assault on women in Abuja.
Policemen who were stationed at the residence of FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, had allegedly pounced on the protesters and filmed the demonstration to pick their faces for persecution.
It would be recalled that some ladies convicted for persecution had narrated how they were raped by policemen.
The women were picked up during a raid by the agents of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Joint Task Team, which is comprised of the Department of Development Control, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the Social Development Secretariat (SDS).
On Sunday, ASP Danjuma Gajere Tanimu, Police Public Relations Officer, in a statement said the two police cameramen were detailed to video the activities at the scene of the protest.
“At the venue of the protest, they were vehemently prevented from carrying out their lawful duty as the protesters disapproved police photographers to Video their activities”, he explained.
“The police photographers were not only humiliated but were booed and assaulted by some of the protesters who went wild despite police caution.
“It is rather unfortunate that a photographer doing his work as seen is being portrayed in bad light and aimed to discredit the police.
“It should be noted that the police photographers were at the scene to capture the activity just like any other photographer.
“The police, therefore, wish to disabuse the mind of members of the public to ignore the circulating assault and insult story as it is not the true situation.”
