FCTA arrested 761 street traders, 172 beggars in July – Minister


The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has disclosed that it arrested no fewer than 761 street traders, hawkers and 172 beggars in the month of July from various parts of the city.

Minister of the FCT, Bala Mohammed made this known on Monday shortly after the FCT Operations Briefing Meeting in his office at Area 11, Garki I District, Abuja.

He informed that the FCT administration also collected a total of 31,166.93 tons of solid waste and deposited at the designated disposal sites in the month of July, 2014.

The Minister revealed that out of the 761 street traders/hawkers arrested, 674 of them were prosecuted and convicted; adding that 31 out of the convicted traders were sentenced to various terms of prison.

Also, in the period under review, he said that the FCT Administration arrested 72 minors; warning that hard times await anybody involve in environmental nuisances in the entire 8,000 square kilometers of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board inspected 1,976 premises for proper sanitation; while in the process, 85 premises were fumigated within the same period, Mohammed said.
