FCT to begin full ban on Commercial Buses June 3

Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA, today, Thursday, disclosed it’s intention to soon take delivery of 300 brand new taxi vehicles out of the 1,000 it had planned to distribute to licensed operators across the nation’s capital city.

FCT Secretary of Transport, Jonathan Ivoke, disclosed this at a stakeholders forum held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. DailyPost monitored the event.

He also emphasised on the FCT administration’s commitment and plans to phase out mini-buses from the city centre, and restrict their operations within the Area Councils and Satellite towns.

Ivoke stated that the government had approved a Mass Transit subsidy for both residents and operators. He said 3rd June, 2013 will be the re-commencement date of the feeder route mini bus services.

He said “only licensed high capacity buses will provide mass transit services in the federal capital city, while the mini buses will operate at the satellite towns and other Area Councils,” adding that tricycle transit operations can only operate at designated Housing Estates and satellite towns.

Ivoke further disclosed that the FCT Minister has already given an approval to the operation of taxi and high capacity Bus Licences to SECDA Nigeria Limited and RTEAN Mass Transit Limited.

“The Transportation Secretariat is about to conclude the Biometric data capturing of all drivers belonging to licensed operators in the FCT. This is compulsory for security and safety of commuters. It also qualifies licensed operators to benefit from the numerous palliatives of the FCT Administration.

“Installation of the operators licensed scheme control room equipment procured by the Transportation secretariat has commenced. This is for a world class traffic monitoring and management of Mass Transit in the FCT using the latest scientific and technological equipment”, he affirmed..

He asserted that more than 350 high capacity buses were set for the commencement of the scheme slated for next month, disclosing that some staff of the companies managing the Parking Metre Services of the FCT Administration were not long ago, arrested and charged for abusing the Park and Pay policy. He said they are currently facing trial before mobile court in the FCT.
