FCT considers resettling 4,780 displaced persons in Kuje

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, on Friday announced its intention to resettle 4,780 Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, squatting in various parts of the FCT at a camp in Kuje, Abuja.

This was as it disclosed the conduct of a biometric exercise on the IDPs, who are presently staying at Church village, Area 1, Wassa community, Waru village and 30 estate in Peggi village, Kuje Area Council.

Director-General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, Alhaji Abass Idriss, who made this known to journalists in Abuja, stated that the IDPs would be moved to the camp once the construction was completed, noting that a security plan had been prepared to ensure that the inhabitants of the proposed camp were safe.

He informed that his agency, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency, had been providing food, water and other essential items to the displaced persons, adding that some Non-Governmental Organisations and the Abuja operational office of NEMA had donated some relief items to the displaced persons.

According to him, the FCT Health Secretariat has carried out an epidemiological survey to guard against possible outbreak of diseases among the displaced persons.

He said the children had been immunised while medical personnel had taken care of the pregnant women.

The FEMA DG explained that his agency had established unit offices at the various communities where the IDPs were squatting to monitor their activities.

Idriss explained that security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services, were keeping an eye on the people to prevent untoward activities.

While asserting that the displaced children were also receiving coaching to make sure they did not miss classes, he assured the people that government was doing all it could to resettle the affected persons at the new camp until they were able to return to their states.

“We collaborated with security agencies in the profiling of the IDPs and some plain clothes security men are among them to ensure security and prevent untoward acts.

In the long term, a design has been adopted for the proposed IDP camp slated for development by the FCT Administration and a location in Kuje Area Council has been identified to site the camp,” he added.
