Fayose: EFCC in persecutory investigation – PDP

The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ongoing investigation of the State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as harassment and persecution of the governor with the intention of silencing the opposition in the country.

The party noted that this is evident in the incoherent manner and trial by error-approach the anti-graft agency is adopting in its investigation.

The party said that the anti-graft agency should come out and explain to Nigerians why its investigation has been marred with confusion which has led to seizing of property belonging to other persons while claiming they belong to Fayose.

PDP, in its statement by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr Jackson Adebayo, in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday, wondered why the EFCC suddenly changed gear to pursue contracts awarded in Ekiti State according to laid down rules instead of their original claim of investigating the source of funds of the governor’s election.

PDP asked the commission to explain to the world the correlation between looking into a N1.2 billion purportedly transferred to the governor for his election in 2014 and seizing his property valued at N1.3 billion or how the questioning of a Federal Government-monitored projects of MDG only in Ekiti State became part of 2014 election problem.

The statement maintained that EFCC was only out to persecute Fayose for daring to be pointing out the wrong and deficient governance that has characterized the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari since inception, adding that the government’s intolerance for opposition had given the country a bad image among the comity of nations.

According to the PDP spokesman, “the EFCC has proven that it does not have any evidence to cage the governor hence it has resorted to manufacturing lies and junks in its purported investigation.

“They would seize one property today and tomorrow the real owner will surface. They will mention one amount today and tomorrow it will be another figure again. They will probe election fund source today when they meet brick wall they will shift to MDG contract or any other suggestions from the APC; all just in a desperate mission to silence Fayose.”

The party called on President Buhari to start the taming of his agents in order to maintain some dignity and seriousness in governance, saying anything short of this would only lead to an irreparable damage to the polity and Nigeria.

“We submit with all intents and purposes that what the EFCC is displaying flagrantly is nothing more than persecutory assignment against our governor, but we are bold to say that the Federal Government will fail in this course because this is anti-democratic and a barbaric mission,” Adebayo said.
