Former Special Adviser on Security to former Governor, Kayode Fayemi, Colonel Joseph Babatunde Oluwayose (rtd), has raised the alarm over alleged threat to his life by the Special Assistant to Governor Ayodele Fayose on Traffic and Environment, Ariyo Afolabi.
In a petition to the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, and copied to the State Director of the Department of Security Services (DSS), National Human Rights Commission and State Secretary of APC, Oluwayose alleged that on April 11, 2016, around 18:47hours, Afolabi called him on mobile phone number 08033829346 in the presence of his wife to threaten him.
APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement that Oluwayose explained in his petition that his wife heard all the governor’s aide said because his phone was on speaker.
Olatunbosun quoted the retired military officer as saying: “He issued a threat to me to the effect that ‘I will ensure that I kill you and your wife if you continue to make negative comments on the government of Governor Fayose’.
“It is imperative to make this official report as a Senior Military Officer who knows the security risk Mr Afolabi has constituted to members of the opposition parties in Ekiti State.”
He alleged that Afolabi is notorious for using thugs to attack members of the opposition political leaders on behalf of the governor.
“In fact, he had earlier attempted to attack me with plank of wood during the last voter registration exercise in Afao-Ekiti,” Oluwayose said in the petition, stressing that Afolabi should be held responsible if anything happened to him or any member of his family.
“I have no business with Mr Afolabi, and he is too junior to me to engage him in private matters, hence I am shocked at his brazen threat to kill me,” he added.
Olatunbosun urged the police and the DSS to investigate Afolabi over the threat, explaining that this became imperative in the face of the governor’s aide’s penchant for attacking members of the opposition on behalf of the governor.
The APC spokesman recalled that Afolabi had last year threatened him in the same manner in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (AC, CID) with OC- Legal and others in attendance in the office of the Commissioner of Police where he had gone to complain on the unlawful arrest of APC members at Igbemo-Ekiti when Afolabi called. He said he put him on phone speaker immediately he identified himself as Ariyo Afolabi from Afao-Ekiti.
He added that Afolabi had been mentioned in several petitions by APC to the security agencies over attacks on the party secretariat and members of the opposition parties and urged the security agencies, particularly the National Security Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari, to investigate him on his serial threats to the opposition party leaders and members.
He also called on the National Human Rights Commission to check the activities of the governor’s aide to ensure freedom and rights of members of the opposition.
