Faulty foundation responsible for Nigeria’s economic, political woes – Lagos University

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Lanre Faghohun has attributed economic and political woes affecting the nation to a lack of solid foundation by past leaders.

Speaking with DAILY POST Thursday night, the academic was emphatic that those leaders were greedy, noting that Nigeria cannot shine in Africa subcontinent due to previous misdeeds.

Earlier in a paper presentation, at the 9th Annual National Environmental Congress in Abuja with a theme, “Inclusive natural resources governance within the change mantra”, he said that when the foundation was faulty, it will definitely affect the structure, while calling for a new beginning now that democracy had come to stay.

He asserted that until the foundation was restructured and some systems presently in operation in the government were changed, it will be difficult for any leader to effect positive change.

Prof. Faghohun said that the judiciary, which was supposed to be the last arbiter of the common man had been corrupted and as well rubbished by some elements in the system.

According to him, “No leader can succeed on this structure. It is not about leaders this time, but about the system and structure on guard and until the systems are restructured, there will be no meaningful development.”

In his key note address, the Executive Director, Environmental Right Action, ERA Dr. Godwin Uyi Ojo, said that the campaign by government that it was going to diversify the economy lacked clear blueprint.

He said, “it is sad that rather than look forward to sustainable resources management, the government is busy looking the way of another round of reckless extradition of natural resources.

Ojo noted that government new natural policy on solid minerals, which would mark full extradition of bitumen, nickel among others, under the earth will not be good enough for sustainable development.
