Fasoranti’s resignation: We are not surprised – Afenifere

Chief Seinde Arogbofa, the Secretary-General, Afenifere, a pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, on Monday urged calm following the resignation of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Afenifere leader resigned on Sunday over an alleged polarisation of the group and its deviation from its set vision and goals. Fasoranti became the leader of Afenifere following the death of Sen. Abraham Adesanya from Ogun.

NAN also reports that crisis had rocked the group in 2008 which led to the emergence of a splinter group — the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) with Mr Wale Oshun as its current leader. Arogbofa told NAN in a telephone interview that he had not met with Fasoranti since he tendered his letter of resignation. “I know Papa anchored his resignation mainly on old age.

“We should not see what has happened as what has never happened; there is nothing new in it. “We should be calm and begin to think and strategise on how to make and move the organisation forward,” he said.

“We will put heads together and set a new course for the group as we did when Pa Adesanya was old and could not go ahead.”

Arogbofa, an author of several literature books and plays, called for the cooperation of all members and the Yoruba, saying “he alone cannot not take the decision as to how to move the organisation forward.’’

Also speaking, Mr Yinka Odumakin, the spokesman for the organisation, said what happened was not beyond their control. Odumakin said Afenifere would be meeting “soon’’ and that details of the meeting would be made public.

He told NAN:“We have some internal things to sort out. Nigerians will soon know when we are through.’’

He said Fasoranti had been there in the most difficult period in the life of the organisation and that he did well as a leader. “All is well with the Afenifere,’’ he added.
