Head Coach of Nigeria’s female national team, Kadiri Ikhana, on Monday tendered his resignation letter following the dismal performance of the team at the just concluded African Women Championship.
The Super Falcons finished a disappointing fourth, after a 31st minute strike by Gaelle Enganamouit sunk the ladies. That lone goal saw them losing 1-0 to Cameroon in a third-place match on Sunday.
This year’s edition has been widely described as the team’s worst-ever AWC outing.
Ikhana in a statement said, “The notice of resignation to the federation is in accordance with my contract. I met the target set for me but resigned because I failed to meet my own personal wish. I wanted to lift the trophy and bring it back home.”
He also apologised to Nigerians for the performance at the continental tournament, adding that he accepted full responsibility for the outing.
His contract with the Nigerian Football Federation which was signed on April 1 2012, mandated him to at least get to the Semi-final stage of the competition.
