The Rivers State Chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON has backed the call by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that those fingered in the alleged printing of fake electoral materials should be arrested and investigated.
ALGON made the call after rising from an emergency meeting held in Port Harcourt.
Secretary of ALGON in the state, Samuel Wonosike, who spoke on behalf of the Association, also said the alleged owner of the printing press where the materials were found, Atonye Peterside was not tortured before making his statements.
While appealing to relevant authorities as well as President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the matter, ALGON said people of Rivers State in the twenty-three Local government area will resist any attempt to cover up the discovery.
“The case of Atonye Peterside is that of a man with a bad case. A man who was caught pants down printing INEC election materials. Even the APC are struggling to cover-up their mess.
“We are aware that the Commissioner of Police in Rivers state is under pressure not to arrest those mentioned as sponsors of the printing press.
“We as the custodians of the 23 Local government areas of this great state have mobilized our people to be on standby to resist any attempt by anybody to try to cover up this mess of the APC, anybody that tries to sweep this under the carpet.
“Thank God INEC has come out to disown them and call for more investigation into the matter and we want to at this point join INEC in that call for the arrest and invesgigation of everyone whose name has been mentioned in this discovery,” Wonosike said.
