Fake ogogoro: Death toll rises to 70 in Rivers state

The deaths caused by the consumption of local gin called ‘Ogogoro’ in Rivers State has increased to an alarming toll of seventy-one.

This revelation was made when the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers state Ministry of Health, Somiari Isaac-Harry appeared before the adhoc committee set-up by the Rivers state House of Assembly to look into the increasing number of deaths caused by the illicit gin.

Isaac-Harry told the Michael Chinda-led adhoc committee that the Ministry of Health now has a total number of eighty cases and seventy one deaths.

He further said the Ministry has been able to trace the source of the killer gin to Bayelsa state, Akwa Ibom state and Aba, in Abia state.

He said, “We have a total of 80 cases. Seventy has died and it is quite unfortunate that the highest number is from Gokana. We actually don’t know where they get their supply but we hope they can just stop drinking.”

Chairman of the adhoc Committee, Michael Chinda said the Lawmakers will take a final position after their report has been submitted and discussed when the House reconvenes tomorrow.
