The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara yesterday harped on the importance of the media in a democracy, urging journalists to expose the mistakes of public office holders with a view to correcting them through constructive criticisms.
Dogara, who made this assertion during the inauguration of the new leadership of the House Press Corps in Abuja, noted that it was only when journalists engage in constructive criticisms of the activities of the House that the lawmakers could sit up.
He, however, called on the media to always dish out factual information to Nigerians so as to enable them make informed decisions.
The Speaker said; “We want your support and that doesn’t mean that you should be singing praises on us. We want you to expose our mistakes as well. We believe it is through that that we can correct our mistakes. The correction we’re looking for include constructive criticisms.
“We all know the importance of the media in any given democracy. Where you have a robust and progressive democracy: that will be because there is a robust media. The media reaches the citizens in such a way that they make informed decisions.”
