Dr. Chinedu Chukwu, a radiologist, has called on the Federal Government to equip the nation’s hospitals, saying more than 80 per cent of the equipment there are outdated.
Chukwu of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State, made the call in an interview on Saturday.
The radiologist said that old equipment in the hospitals was hindering effective treatment of the patients.
He called for improved facilities in hospitals, especially at tertiary health institutions, to enable them to offer better healthcare services to patients.
According to him, there is a need for hospitals to be well-equipped for early diagnosis of ailments in view of the alarming rate of cancer and other related diseases.
He said that many hospitals were in dire need of the latest X-ray machines, CT scan, MRI machines, ultrasound and mammogram to reduce the time wasted by patients in hospitals.
Chukwu said: “Putting the necessary machines and equipment in place for hospital personnel to work with will improve healthcare delivery and also stop many patients from travelling abroad for treatment.
“We are not being given the chance to do our jobs due to limitations of facilities and incentives by the government.”
He appealed to the Radiographers Registration Board to expand the scope of its statutory functions and apply full force of law on any erring radiographer to check quacks.
