Omu-Aran (Kwara), Sept. 24, 2014 (NAN) Alhaji Kareem Adewumi, a one-time Chairman of Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara, is dead, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Adewumi, 55, was said to have slumped few minutes after 1p.m. on Wednesday in his residence on Iloffa-Omu-Aran Road, Kwara.
He was rushed to the Omu-Aran General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival, according to his uncle, Mr Dayo Adewumi.
“We noticed he was struggling to breath and later slumped; we immediately rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“This is shocking and unbelievable; we were together in the morning; he even drove his wife to her shop,” Dayo told NAN.
NAN reports that the deceased, who hailed from Ile-Ire in Omu-Aran, was the chairman of the council from 2003 to 2006.
Alhaji Luqman Owolewa, the current Chairman of the council, described the deceased as a great man, saying that his death was an irreparable loss to the council area and the entire state.
“We are all living witnesses to the numerous achievements his tenure recorded.
“The memories will continue to linger in the minds of the people for a long time,” Owolewa said.
In his comments, Oba Charles Ibitoye, the Olomu of Omu-Aran, described the death as a monumental loss.
“He was loved by all and sundry because of his generosity, kindness and exemplary leadership style.
“He is ever ready to contribute his quota to the development of the community,“ he told NAN.
Mr Yemi Adediran, an employee of the council, described the presence of a large number of the council workers at his burial as a mark of respect for the deceased.
He told NAN that the ex-chairman impacted positively on the lives of the council workers during his tenure.
NAN reports that the remains of the ex-chairman have been buried in his residence according to Islamic rites.
He is survived by his wife, Yemi, and children. (NAN)
