Nigeria’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Gbenga Ashiru is dead.
It was reported that he died earlier on Saturday in a South African hospital after a long battle with brain tumor. He was aged 66.
He had been hospitalized for over three months.
Ashiru, a close ally of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, was removed at the height of the face-off between the retired General and President Goodluck Jonathan.
He was among nine ministers relieved of the appointments in a cabinet reshuffle in September 2013.
After his tenure, the Ogun-born career diplomat gave himself a pat on the back, saying he succeeded in getting 22 Nigerians into international positions barely two years into his appointment.
