Ex-convict bags 2-year jail term for robbery

The magistrate court sitting in Ejigbo area of Lagos State has sentenced a 34-year-old man, Mr. Idowu Dosumu, to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour without option of fine for breaking into one Mr. Taofik Oguntade’s apartment in an attempt to steal.

It was said that on the 14th day of July 2019 at about 10:30pm, when the complaint, Oguntade was sitting in his apartment at 26, Goshen Avenue, Isheri area of Lagos, the suspect, Idowu, forcefully broke into his apartment with a sharp iron and ordered him to lay down facing the ground.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Kenneth Asibor, the suspect demanded the location of money and other valuables in the house while the complaint immediately raised an alarm by dragging with the suspect, which alerted the Elestate security men, who arrested the thief and handed him over to the police.

“It was, however, discovered in the course of the investigation that the suspect was an ex-convict who just returned from jail in May 2019, having served 18-month imprisonment for a similar offence,” he said.

Asibor told the court that the suspect is an habitual criminal who specialised in breaking into houses majorly on Sundays when people must have gone to church, stating that he was caught in this case as he broke into the house thinking the wife and the children of the man had gone to church, not knowing that the man was in the house.

He explained: “The suspect had been in the court in the year 2017, sentenced on community duty. And in 2018, he was also brought to court for breaking of house, where he was sentenced for 18 months in April 2018. He was released in May 2019 and committed the same offence.”

The suspect confessed to be guilty of the charge and also confessed to have been specialised in breaking and stealing around Isheri Idimu area, Badagry Expressway and other parts of Lagos metropolis.

The police visited their hideout at Godgrace Hotel in Alaba Lagos Market, where some of his conspirators were arrested.

The other gang members arrested were latter granted bail while the suspect was sentenced to serve two years jail term with hard labour by the presiding magistrate Teslim Shomade.
