Europa League: Wenger names club Arsenal wish to avoid in quarter final

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has said he would not be pleased to meet Atletico Madrid at the next stage of the Europa League.

Arsenal saw off AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16 after beating the Italian side 3-1 at the Emirate on Thursday night.

Wenger named the Spanish side as the team he hopes Arsenal would avoid in the Europa League quarter-final draw.

With Arsenal leading 2-0 from the first leg, AC Milan halved the deficit through Hakan Calhanoglu.

But a brace from Danny Welbeck and another from Granit Xhaka took the North Londoners through.

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Friday and Wenger readily admitted he would rather avoid Atletico Madrid.

Asked the team he wouldn’t want to face in last 8, the Frenchman told BT Sport, “That’s certainly the team you would want to avoid.”

Atletico Madrid came through after beating Lokomotiv Moscow 8-1 on aggregate.

On who else it could be, he added, “I don’t mind, we will see. We can’t control that.”
