Europa League: Unai Emery drops Cech, chooses another goalkeeper for Vorskla Poltava clash

Arsenal boss, Unai Emery, has confirmed that Bernd Leno will start in goal against Vorskla Poltava in their Europa League opener on Thursday.

The German goalkeeper has watched from the sidelines since joining Arsenal in the summer.

Emery has kept faith with Petr Cech.

But the German goalkeeper will now make his debut for Arsenal as the Gunners prepare to kick off their European campaign.

The Spaniard said he was convinced Leno was ready to make his first start after a recommendation from Javi Garcia.

“Bernd Leno is going to play in the starting XI,’ Emery told press conference ahead of the clash with Vorskla.

“In our planning for the goalkeeper, we spoke with Javi Garcia, the goalkeeper coach, and we need to give Leno the chances to get some minutes.

“The quality for the goalkeeper is confidence and he has that.

“He is going to start and he can go a long way here in Arsenal. He is young and he is here because he showed us his quality.

“We signed Leno for now and to improve with us and to compete with other goalkeepers. I am very happy with his work every day and I am looking forward to him playing well.”

“I spoke with him [Leno] before the [Manchester City] match about my decision.

“I gave him my argument for the decision. He is performing well every day in training, the best thing for him and us is for him to start to play and give us his performance.”
