Europa League: Sarri singles out two players, reveals why Chelsea drew 2-2 with MOL Vidi

Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri, has revealed why his side had a 2-2 draw with MOL Vidi in their last group game of the Europa League last night.

The Blues had already sealed their place in the last-16 as group winners, but the clash in Hungary was a chance for Sarri to give some of his squad much-needed minutes.

Cesc Fabregas captained the side, with starts for Alvaro Morata, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley.

Youngsters Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu were also handed places in the first team.

Chelsea took the lead in the first half through a Willian free-kick, but the hosts equalised almost instantly after Ampadu headed into his own net from a corner.

The Hungarians made it 2-1 in the second period with a stunning effort by Loic Nego but Chelsea equalised through another set piece.

Substitute Olivier Giroud, who had replaced the injured Morata in the first half, scored from a free-kick to level the scores.

Speaking to post match conference, Sarri praised the young Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu.

Speaking on the 2-2 draw, Sarri said of Vidi players, “They are a good team in an offensive phase. In the defensive phase they are good when they defend very low. As I said in the press conference before I like the number ten, but he wasn’t on the pitch until the last ten minutes.

“The own goal is not the fault of Ampadu. We were zonal marking. When an opponent touches a ball at first it is difficult. I think he played a very good match You need to consider if you play Ampadu in the usual team it is easier for him.

“It is not easy for him with so many changes. I am pleased with him and Callum. They need to improve in every well, tactically, but they are in the right way.

“We made a lot of mistakes from the tactical point of view. I am happy with the character and reaction from the second goal. From the tactical point of view we made a lot of mistakes. We lost a lot of ball, can manage it better at the end.”
