Europa League: Arsenal beat AC Milan 2-0, Atletico win, Dortmond lose

Arsenal beat AC Milan 2-0 in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 at San Siro on Thursday, thereby taking a major step towards reaching the quarter final.

The Italian giants came into the match having gone 13 consecutive matches unbeaten, while Arsene Wenger’s men had won just once in their last five in all competitions.

First-half goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey silenced the crowd at the San Siro.

Mkhitaryan opened the scoring with his first Arsenal goal on 15 minutes when he settled a Mesut Ozil pass, cut inside and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Gunners added their second before the break through Ramsey, who received a through ball from Ozil down the right channel, calmly rounded Donnarumma and slotted into the empty net.

In other matches, German side, Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of advancing are in jeopardy following a 2-1 home defeat to Salzburg.

Salzburg scored in the 49th-minute via a controversial Valon Berisha penalty that was given after Omer Toprak brought down Hee-Chan Hwang near the endline.

Salzburg doubled their lead when Stefan Lainer cut the ball back through the 18-yard box for Berisha to lash home his second.

Christian Pulisic came on for Dortmond after the hour mark, and the U.S. teenager made an immediate impact, racing towards goal and delivering a cross for Andre Schurrle to pull one back.

Atletico Madrid beat Lokomotiv Moscow 3-0 at their Wanda Metropolitano home.
