Former Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Arteta does not want to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager, report says.

According to Metro UK, the Manchester City assistant coach does not feel ready for the role.

Arsenal’s chief executive, Ivan Gazidis is understood to have shortlisted the Spaniard as a potential Arsenal boss following Wenger’s decision to stand down at the end of the season.

But Arteta, who is in his second season working alongside Pep Guardiola, reportedly has no intention of returning to his former club.

The midfielder ended his playing career with the Gunners in 2016 and immediately took up a coaching position under Guardiola that summer.

It is understood that Arteta did not leave Arsenal on the best of terms as he initially wanted to remain at the club as part of Wenger’s coaching staff, but Wenger did not buy the idea.

Wenger had said he did not want to create “artificial positions” for players looking for coaching roles, and even suggested shortly before Arteta’s departure that the midfielder could extend his playing career.

Arteta is currently happy in his first-team coaching role with Guardiola even as City’s players enjoy working with the Spaniard.
