Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino, has explained why his side were defeated 2-1 by Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League encounter played at Wembley Stadium.
Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino in either side of half-time ensured victory for the Reds.
Erik Lamela lone goal was not enough to get a point for Spurs.
Pochettino, however, said that his side were defeated by the Reds because his players made a lot of mistakes during the game and they were punished for not converting those chances.
“Liverpool were better,” Pochettino was quoted by Daily Star as saying at post-match conference.
“We competed, we were close, and the action at the end of the game was crazy and the challenge on Son at the end should have been a penalty.
“Then the result would have been different.
“When we started the second half, there were some massive chances for us to score.
He added, “If a penalty was given to Sonny, we would be talking in a different way about character and personality”
“We hit the post with Lucas Moura – that should have changed the game but then we conceded the second goal and it was difficult.
“The team kept pushing and if a penalty was given to Sonny, we would be talking in a different way about character and personality.
“Liverpool is a great team. I think that we made a lot of mistakes and we were punished by a team that [makes it] difficult when you concede these chances.”
