EPL: What Sir Ferguson told Hazard

Former Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson told Eden Hazard that he would turn him into the best player in the world if he chose to join the club from Lille.

Many Europe’s top clubs wanted to sign Hazard when it was clear that he would leave Lille at the age of 21.

And Manchester United, managed by Ferguson at the time, were battling with Manchester City and Chelsea for Hazard’s signature.

Ferguson was determined to bring in a new player at Old Trafford by signing the Belgian.

ESPN reports that Ferguson told Hazard that United’s track record in fulfilling the talent of young players was unmatched and he cited Cristiano Ronaldo as an example.

Hazard, however, made the choice of moving to Stamford Bridge following Chelsea’s Champions League success weeks earlier.

Chelsea were able to offer Hazard Champions League football and were the only club willing to meet his wage demands, as well as a reported £6m in agent fees.
