EPL: What crisis at Man United has done for Man City – Phelan

Former Manchester United assistant coach, Mike Phelan, has revealed how Manchester City was benefiting from the crisis rocking United.

Phelan noted that the faceoff between United’s chief executive officer, Ed Woodward and Jose Mourinho only serves to help Manchester City.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager has had a troublesome start to the new season marked by a dismal display in the 3-2 defeat away to Brighton last Sunday.

The manager has been at loggerheads with Woodward over transfers.

He was left frustrated after failing to convince the club’s board to sign some of his key targets.

On the other side, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have made a flying start to their title defence, although they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Wolves on Saturday.

Phelan is, however, convinced that the in-fighting at United only helps to strengthen City’s cause.

“I think what is there at the moment is fierce competition within the city, and if Manchester United are at loggerheads within the club I think it just helps fuel Manchester City’s cause more than anything else,” Phelan said.

“And I think that’s something they need to be very careful of because Manchester City are a very big club now and they’re very well run and they know how to use certain situations, and I think that helps – unrest across the road helps.”
