Manchester City’s old boy, Adam Johnson, scored the only goal, as Sunderland defeated the reigning English champions at the Stadium of Light – a result that leaves that seven points behind fierce rivals, Manchester United.

United themselves left it late to grab all three points, in their game against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men came from behind three times to defeat the visitors 4-3, with Javier Hernandez scoring the winner, deep into extra time.

Juan Mata’s fine effort before the break, was enough for Chelsea to defeat Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road.

West Brom heaped more pressure on Harry Redknapp with a 2-1 victory over QPR, while Everton moved into fourth place with a similar 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

Fulham drew 1-1 at home with Southampton while Michu and co could not find a way past Reading, drawing 0-0 at the Madjeski Stadium.

Gareth scored a brilliant hat-trick, as whitewashed Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park, while Stoke City beat Liverpool 3-1 in the late kick-off.
