Arsenal failed to go top of the Premier League, after a crushing 4-0 defeat to Southampton on Boxing Day.

The Gunners went into the last fixture of the day, knowing that only a win will see them become the new leaders, following Leicester City’s 1-0 loss to Liverpool earlier in the day.

However, Arsene Wenger’s men conceded a Cuco Martina wonder strike before the break, before a Shane Long double and a Jose Fonte header settled the match in the second half.

Louis van Gaal is on the brink, after Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Stoke City at the Britannia.

The Red Devils have lost four consecutive games for the first time since 1961 and have not won in seven.

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Watford, Everton needed a late winner to beat Newcastle 1-0, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace ended goalless, while Manchester City hammered Sunderland 4-1.

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Norwich City 3-0 at home and Swansea claimed a narrow 1-0 win over West Brom.
