Manchester United kept the six-point gap, between themselves and rivals, Manchester City, after a 3-1 win at home over Sunderland. Robin van Persie opened the scoring, reacting brilliantly inside the box, to curl the ball past Mignolet. Tom Cleverley doubled the lead, after an exquisite one-two with Michael Carrick. Wayne Rooney scored the third, after good work from Van Persie, before former United striker Fraizer Campbell, scored a consolation.

City had earlier beaten Newcastle 3-1, thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure. Demba Ba scored the only goal for Alan Pardew’s team, as their poor form continues.

Christian Benteke grabbed a brace and an assist, as Aston Villa stunned Liverpool at Anfield. Steven Gerrard’s predatory header was too little and came too late.

Harry Redknapp’s magic at QPR seems to be in full swing, as the London team recorded their first three points of the campaign and moved away from the bottom of the log. Adel Taarabat scored twice, before Petric set up a frantic finale. But Rangers held on to win.

Everton drew 1-1 away at Stoke, while Norwich defeated Wigan 2-1 at Carrow Road.
