Maurizio Sarri has explained why he substituted striker, Alvaro Morata, in Chelsea’s victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
Sarri said he substituted Morata in the 2-0 victory over Bournemouth because he wanted the added aerial threat which French striker, Oliver Giroud provided after the break.
Morata, a former Real Madrid and Juventus striker, found the net against Arsenal but cut a frustrated figure up front for the majority of Saturday’s clash with Bournemouth.
Giroud came on to replace Morata in the 61st minute and the Frenchman made an almost immediate impact, assisting Pedro for Chelsea’s opener with a clever one-two.
Eden Hazard put the Blues out of sight in the 85th minute and Sarri defended his decision to replace Morata.
Asked about the substitution, the Italian told post-match press conference, “It depends on the situation on the pitch.
“We crossed lots so I thought Giroud in that moment was better, it depends on the situation.
“At the moment we had three or four or five plans on the pitch. We called on Giroud because it was his moment on the pitch.
“Maybe Alvaro needs more space, but Giroud is very useful.”
