Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, has revealed that Brazilian midfielder, Fred, was signed to replace Michael Carrick, who retired last season.
The Portuguese also said that the process of signing Fred started “a long time ago” adding that the midfielder was perfect for United.
Fred signed a long-term deal with the Red Devils in June in a £52 million move from Shakhtar Donestsk.
“Fred, you know we did it quite a long time ago, we started the process a long time ago,” Mourinho said yesterday in Los Angeles, at the start of United’ s US pre-season tour.
“We lost Michael Carrick, we think Fred is the kind of player we need to complement the qualities of our midfield players.”
The Brazilian is one of three signings so far for United this summer with Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot also arriving.
