Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has expressed his happiness at the news that Chris Smalling has signed a new long-term deal.
Smalling has been in talks with United for several months, with the defender seeking a big wage bump after eight years at the club.
The England international has now extended his deal until 2022.
Although United are in the hunt for a new centre-back in January, Mourinho says he is “very happy” Smalling is on board for the long-term.
“I am very happy Chris has signed a new contract.
“Chris has been with the club for a number of years and is now one of the senior players within our squad,” Mourinho told United’s official website.
