EPL: Mourinho gives injury updates on Lukaku, Fellaini, Valencia, Carrick

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has provided updates on the fitness of the club stars Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick.

Mourinho, who was without eight first-team players for Monday’s EPL 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park, said the ‘situation is improving’.

£75million summer signing Lukaku, who has scored 16 goals this season, is fit to return for Friday evening’s FA Cup clash against Derby County along with Fellaini.

Full back Valencia and Carrick are also nearing returns although both remain unavailable as United prepare to face Championship high-flyers Derby at Old Trafford.

The United boss told English media ahead of Friday’s FA Cup clash with Derby: “Romelu [Lukaku] is okay,’ Mourinho said. “From the injured players, Fellaini is back and Michael Carrick is back in training, not to competition, but he is back in training with the team.”

“Romelu Lukaku is fit again and in line to start against Derby. Sergio Romero will start for the Red Devils.

“Antonio Valencia will be back to the team next week so not playing tomorrow but back to the team next week so the situation is improving for us.”

“I am going to play Romero because Romero is a top, top goalkeeper. ‘He deserves to play and David [de Gea] deserves a rest. Romero is going to be Argentina goalkeeper at the World Cup in a few months so for everything Romero means to us, Romero plays,” he said.
