Former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward, Michael Owen, has singled out Manchester United forward, Marcos Rashford, for praise in United’s Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday evening. Rashford was used as a point man with Romelu Lukaku in Jose Mourinho’s new-look 3-5-2 formation.
Stuart Armstrong opened the scoring for Southampton before a sublime free kick from Cedric doubled the hosts’ advantage.
Rashford gave away the free kick that led to Cedric’s goal, but Owen said that the mistake was the only bad thing the England striker did in the first half.
Rashford laid on the assist for Romelu Lukaku’s first goal in 12 games to reduce the deficit.
He then ran at the Southampton defence with his frightening pace and his low cross was turned home by Ander Herrera to equalise before half time.
And at the interval, Owen praised the forward for having the biggest impact on the match.
“I thought he’s been outstanding today,” Owen told BT Sport.
“He made two mistakes for the free kick for Southampton.
“But he’s the one player, we spoke before the game about running, it’s very, very simple but in this day and age you have to run and run fast and be direct and make things happen.
“I think that Rashford by and large is the only player in the Manchester United team that does that.
“I thought Ashley Young had a good first half.
“But Rashford runs at players and it causes havoc, it changes the picture all the time.
“And when he does that it’s obviously another goal.”
