EPL: Lampard speaks on N’Golo Kante’s midfield role at Chelsea

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has insisted that Midfielder N’Golo Kante can have the freedom to drive up the pitch in his midfield role for the club.

Kante made his first start under Lampard during Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool in the Super Cup last Wednesday.

Much was made of the decision by former Blues boss, Maurizio Sarri, to play Jorginho at the base of Chelsea’s midfield, which pushed Kante into a more advanced box-to-box role.

Lampard, who was expected to reinstate Kante to his favoured defensive midfield, said the France international is just too good to sit and defend in the midfield only.

Speaking on Kante’s midfield position ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Leicester City, Lampard told reporters at Cobham in his pre-match press conference on Friday: “too much was made of N’Golo Kante’s position in midfield last season.

“Nobody is pinned down to an absolute structure. He doesn’t just have to sit and defend, he can have the freedom to drive up the pitch too.”

Kante said: “I like to play in this position, this is where I played last year.

“The coach asked me to play in this positon, I like to do it.

“I know what to do with my teammates and we played a good game tonight.”
