EPL: Ian Wright blames one Arsenal player for 5-1 defeat to Liverpool

Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, has slammed the club’s summer signing, Stephan Lichtsteiner, after his calamitous first-half display against Liverpool.

The visitors stunned Anfield by taking a shock early lead through Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but Unai Emery’s joy was short-lived.

Roberto Firmino restored parity, capitalising on a fortuitous ricochet off the hapless Lichtsteiner in the 14th minute and took advantage of more horrendous defending little over 90 seconds later, to put the league leaders ahead.

Lichtsteiner was conspicuous by his absence just past the half hour mark, when Mohamed Salah was left all alone at the far post to set-up Sadio Mane for a tap-in and the Egypt international compounded Arsenal’s misery by smashing home a penalty in first half injury time.

Lichtsteiner, a free signing from Juventus in the summer, was badly at fault for Brighton’s equaliser in the Boxing Day draw and Wright could hardly comprehend the Swiss veteran’s incompetence against Liverpool.

“You know something, if this was a crime scene Lichtsteiner’s fingerprints are all over everything that goes wrong for Arsenal at the minute,” Wright told BT Sport.
