Former Manchester United player, Gary Neville has told midfielder, Mesut Ozil that he must show commitment to Arsenal and help the club win trophies and secure a return to the Champions League.
This is coming after the player signed his new long-term contract at the Emirate Stadium.
Arsenal confirmed yesterday that the Germany international had put pen to paper on a new contract, believed to be worth £350,000-a-year.
The 29-year-old has endured a mixed spell at the Emirates since signing from Real Madrid in 2013.
He has won three FA Cups but failing to challenge for the Premier League or the Champions League.
Neville told Sky Sports, “Losing Alexis Sanchez [to Manchester United] was a blow, so to get Ozil sorted is positive for them.
“But he now needs to perform at the level he has been performing in recent months for the next few years, to get Arsenal the trophies they need and to get them back up into that top four.”
Also, a former Liverpool player, Jamie Carragher, said Ozil must improve in his contribution to the club and cement himself alongside the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry.
Carragher said, “I think the question has always been whether he does decide the big games, is he the man to take them to big trophies and the Premier League?
“That has not happened over the last few years, and that has to happen for him to be placed alongside the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry.”
