Chelsea have suffered a major injury blow as defender Andreas Christensen has left the Danish national team and has been sent back to Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old, a first-team regular under Antonio Conte this season, was surprisingly absent from the squad that beat Panama in Brondby on Thursday.

Denmark manager, Age Hareide, explained after the 1-0 victory that the player is carrying a knock and has returned to Chelsea prematurely to undergo treatment.

The youngster is believed to be feeling the effects of Chelsea’s extra-time win over Leicester Hareide said, “Andreas Christensen has been sent home to London.

“We do not want to take any risks with him. We have called up Peter Ankersen and Lasse Nielsen, so we are adequately covered in defence.

“I cannot say exactly what is wrong with Christensen, but it is a little fatigue. It’s not serious, but it can be.

“It is a bit frustrating because we would have liked to trial him in both central defence and as a defensive midfielder.”
