EPL: Carragher, Souness reveals Man Utd players responsible for 2-0 defeat to Arsenal

Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher have picked out Manchester United’s midfield, as a key factor in their defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Goals from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw the Gunners leapfrog Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men into fourth place.

Souness was unimpressed with United’s midfield and identified Paul Pogba, Fred and Nemanja Matic as an issue for the visitors.

He said on Sky Sports: “Arsenal started well and grabbed the initiative.

“United huffed and puffed for most of the game.

“It wasn’t the United in recent weeks and the biggest reason was that the midfield was off the pace. Fred, Matic, Pogba couldn’t get near them.”

Souness and Carragher both slammed Matic for letting Xhaka getaway for Arsenal’s opener.

Carragher also identified United’s midfield lack of energy and could not understand why Fred was not closing Xhaka down when he let loose on De Gea’s goal.

“Fred is actually moving away from the ball,’ Carragher said.

The result ended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 12-game unbeaten start in the league.
